On the way to Charleston, Blackbeard found a ship and four sloops. When Teach hoisted his flag, and began to fire at them, the captain and his men left their ship and fled to shore. Teach burned two of the sloops, and let the others depart. Blackbeard blockaded the port of Charleston for nearly a week. The pirates seized several ships attempting to enter or leave the port and detained the crew and passengers of one ship, the Crowley, as prisoners. As ransom for the hostages, Blackbeard demanded a chest of medicine. The medicines were eventually delivered, the captives were released, and the pirates continued their journey down the coast.
