Blackbeard died on November 22, 1718 in Ocrakoke, North Carolina. As he was sailing up the coast, he became trapped between two navy ships and a sandbar. Blackbeard and his crew got ready to fight and so did Lieutenant Robert Maynard and his crew. The next day Blackbeard headed straight toward the sandbar going through a narrow channel. When the navy ships followed, they got stuck because they hit the sandbar. When Blackbeard fired his cannons, his ship hurled backwards and also got stuck on the sandbar. One of the navy ships was completely destroyed and Maynard’s was battered. Maynard told his crew to throw food and water barrels overboard so they would float away from the sandbar. Then Maynard and his crew hid below deck with pistols and swords ready. Blackbeard and his crew threw grenades on the seemingly empty ship. But when the pirates bordered the ship, Maynard and his crew jumped out and started shooting. Blackbeard came face to face with Maynard and they both shot. Blackbeard missed, but Maynard hit Blackbeard. Even though Blackbeard was shot, he still managed to cut Maynard’s sword blade with his sword. Then, just before Blackbeard finished off Maynard, one of Maynard’s crew members came up behind Blackbeard and slashed his throat.
