Over the past 17 days, there has been a sizable spike in crime, especially gun-related, both on the campus and just off-campus, culminating with Tuesday's murder/suicide. Here's a rundown of the recent events, and where they happened.

0: Two allegedly robbed in armed robbery

Two armed suspects approached three people from behind at about 11:20 p.m. on Feb. 8. Two of the three were robbed of personal property. University Police and Prince George's County Police were unable to locate the suspects.

1: Armed robbery in Lot KK

At about 10:40 p.m. on Feb. 10, an armed male suspect allegedly robbed a female student, taking her cash and phone. Police canvassed the area — Lot KK is located near the chemical and nuclear engineering building — but did not find the suspect.

2: Fabricated armed robbery

A student reported that she was robbed at gunpoint at about 12:05 a.m. on Feb. 7. While the student alleged her assailant wore a black mask, black and red Air Jordan sneakers and a black pullover with a hood, police determined her story had been fabricated.

3: Student ambushed by three men

Three males, carrying brass knuckles and a knife, punched and robbed a student in front of Shanghai Cafe on Jan. 27. The student's wallet and iPhone were stolen, but the iPhone was recovered when police discovered the suspects. 20-year-old Edgar Hernandez of Riverdale, a 15-year-old male and a 17-year-old male were arrested in connection with the crime.

4: Attempted armed robbery

At about 1:15 p.m. on Jan. 27, a man allegedly displayed a handgun inside The Varsity and demanded a person's laptop. The victim refused, and after a brief scuffle, the suspect fled the scene. Police arrested Demonte Antonio Spearman, a resident of the 4700 block of Navahoe Street in College Park, in connection with the crime.

5: Murder/suicide

Early Feb. 12, three males were shot, two of whom were killed, on the 8700 block of 36th Ave. 

 
The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect, who lived in the home, lit a fire in the basement. Reportedly, two students went downstairs to see what was happening. Then, according to police, all three went in front of the house, where the suspect began shooting. The suspect shot one as the other individual fled. The shooter then killed himself. One victim was killed, while the other is being treated with non-life-threatening injuries.
