Location:

John Joseph Moakley Courthouse
One Courthouse Way
Boston, MA 02210

Web site: http://www.discoveringjustice.org

Description:

Discovering Justice is a leader in civic and justice education, teaching K-8 children to value the justice system, realize the power of their own voices, and embrace civic responsibility. It holds a Mock Trial event for 6th, 7th & 8th graders at the conclusion of a 10-week after-school program in collaboration with Citizen Schools.  The event draws over 500 people, with over 100 students participating in 10 concurrent trials, over 100 volunteers serving as witnesses and juries, and Federal and State judges presiding.

Yale volunteers will spend the evening at the Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse observing the trials and helping Discovering Justice evaluate the event: how the children performed, how the judges exercised their responsibilities, etc.  Discovering Justice does not have enough staff to observe all 10 trials and has never been able to get a full perspective of the event.  Yale's volunteers will perform an important service in being their eyes and ears in the courtrooms they cannot cover.

Schedule:
5:30 - 6:00 orientation
6:00 - 7:00 observe, evaluate Mock Trials
7:00 - 7:30 pizza celebration and debrief

Location:

650 Dudley Street
Dorchester 02125

Description:

This free drop-in after school program serves an average of 100 children ages 6-12 Monday through Thursday.   Participants begin to arrive from school at 2:30 and get a snack (food).  They begin homework (teaching) shortly after 3pm.  At 4:30, the program period (enrichment, arts, spiritual development) occurs, exposing the kids to dance, theater, recreation, sports leagues, swimming, arts & crafts, etc.  At 5:30, dinner begins in 2 seatings (boys and girls separately).  The program ends at 6:30pm when the last of the children are picked up by a parent/guardian.

The program always needs homework helpers and volunteers can be of great assistance during the program hour.  Serving dinner or serving as a table parent with the kids is another area in which volunteers would be greatly helpful.  The children come from diverse backgrounds culturally and the center is located in the most financially challenged neighborhood of Boston, right on the Dorchester/Roxbury line.

Ample secure parking is available on site.  The center is also accessible from the Fairmont Commuter Rail Line and several MBTA Bus Routes.
