Via New Columbia Heights:I just spoke with Whitney Stringer, who is doing PR for Z-Burger, and she said they're aiming for early to mid-February to open the store in the Tivoli, not within 3-4 weeks as PoP reported.

I stopped in to get a quick update and indeed they had just finished a staff meeting and are now aiming for a grand opening on Feb. 18th. While the furniture is still getting set up, I did see some awesome mod furniture. Gonna be a great addition to Columbia Heights.

Italian restaurant
This has been an enduring mystery for 11th Street in Columbia Heights. First Columbia Heights Coffee was going to expand, then it was going to become a furniture store, then it was going to become a tapas restaurant then…
Well, lots of folks have noticed renewed construction in the space at 3418 11th St, NW. A new building permit was issued at the end of October and I was finally able to briefly catch one of the managers at the space. By the by, the space is starting to look pretty sweet with exposed brick walls. I hope to grab some photos when the buildout gets a bit closer to finish. Anyway, not a lot of details but I was told it is going to be an Italian restaurant called Maple.

24/7 diner and coffee house
While chatting yesterday with Tryst beverage director David Fritzler about an entirely unrelated matter, Best Bites learned about bar plans for the company's forthcoming Columbia Heights operation. "Fishbowl" has been put out there as a possible monicker, though Fritzler referred to the project as "The Fourth Place"—it is the fourth venture from his boss, Constantine Stavropoulos, who also owns The Diner and Open City in Woodley Park. (The latter was referred to as "The Third Place" for some time prior to its opening.) The new project, which occupies 7,000 square feet of real estate at 11th and Monroe, will have a bar that seats 22 to 24 people, according to Fritzler. There will be an emphasis on value wines and lesser-known varietals, and we'll likely see a collection of keg wines behind the bar, along with a nitrogen system.

"inauthentic" Mexican / Tacqueria
… a mix of the “traditional and newfangled” that includes antojitos (small plates), tortas (sandwiches), and tacos. There will be posole and mariscos, but also chicharrones with “Mexican kimchi” and “chiles rellenos with pork belly.” Expect carne asada and al pastor tacos, but also a version with tripe and foie gras and another with herb-marinated octopus.

global fusion restaurant
"After a small delay getting permits in order, I’m happy to share the news that things are back on track. The name of the restaurant will be Mad Momos and if construction goes according to plans, they hope to soft open sometime in May. One more detail from the global fusion mix – beer. They also hope to open a small scale beer garden in the back patio."

contemporary American cuisine
Folks have been wondering for many months what would be coming to the former El Salvadorena space located at 3548 14th St, NW (14th and Parkwood Pl) in Columbia Heights. I’m psyched to finally get word of the new plans. According to a recent liquor license application The Pinch will be a:
“New restaurant serving contemporary American cuisine. Occasional live music or spoken word performance to be offered in basement area. Occupancy load is 99. Sidewalk Café 28.”

D.C. USA has another large retail tenant. Shoe discount store DSW has signed a lease for 23,000 square feet at the Columbia Heights, Target-anchored development.
The retailer has been rumored for the location for some time, but things are now official. The store will open near the end of 2012.
