0: MacArthur Blvd - Good for Steady State

This route is pretty typical. Takes you out MacArthur Blvd into Potomac, MD.

Once in Potomac, if you go left on River like in this route, there are essentially miles of of low traffic, rolling roads. Eventually in Poolesville River Rd turns to gravel. But that's 20ish miles from Potomac.

You can easily do 5-6 hours using this basic route to get to Potomac, MD and then following River Rd. further west. Most of the roads off of River can easily make big loops back to it.

1: Persimmon Tree Loop

Pretty common route back to MacArthur from River Rd.

2: "Climb"

A lot of local rides will go down into the park and climb back out from the bottom.

There's also a bathroom and generally the gate keeper person will let you through without having to pay.

5: Rock Creek Park

Closed to traffic on the weekends. But it's also insanely crowded by people on hybrids, walkers, runners, roller bladders, dog walkers and anybody else who wants to walk on the wrong side of the the road as if they're the only person on the planet.

6: Skyline Drive

$8/day or $30/year for a pass. You can get on in Front Royal and it's all the climbing you could possibly want to do. It's about 60-75 minutes from the DC Area.

Gate to gate, is 105 miles and 10,000' of climbing. Typically some sort of out and back is what people do.

7: "7am Ride"

Saturday mornings, 7am, fastest group ride in the area. It will split up into multiple groups generally.

They go out into MD. I think the route stays the same weekly, but this is where they always meet and start from.

8: NCVC Espresso Ride

Starts Sundays at 9am from Dean and Deluca.

This ride is meant for NCVC team members but they're not going to tell people to go away. I'd say it's pretty medium fast.

For other NCVC (biggest local team in the area):

9: Coppi Ride

8:35am from the Java Shack in Arlington.

60ish miles. Casual until they get through Rock Creek Park then it gets fast further out in MD.

Best group ride around in my opinion.

they also don't care if non team members show up.

10: VDay Sunday Ride

VDay is a smaller team in the area. This route is basically the exact same as the Coppi Ride. I believe they leave at 9am on Sundays from the Caboose Cafe in Del Ray.

~60ish miles I think.

Definitely not as fast as the Coppi Ride but not meandering much either.

11: Sugarloaf Mountain

Closest "mountain" to us. there are plenty of various route sheets if you google for it online. It's generally 80-100 miles round trip.

In my opinion, it's not worth the effort to get to. It's only about a 2 mile climb and it's not very hard. I'd rather drive the hour to Skyline Drive.
