Great cheap street seafood spot.  They serve the best mien xao cua in town (glass noodles fried with crab) and ngao xao ot (clams in a chilli lemongrass sauce), about 55,000 vnd per dish. Go the khaoi lang chien (sweet potato chips) too!

H? ti?u are probably my favorite kind of noodles.  Thinnish noodles that look similar to pho, but have a delicious chewy texture.  Served in a pork broth with slices of pork and bean sprouts.  This spot does a mean hu tiu kho too, which is hu tiu noodles topped with veggies, pork mince, pork slices, peanuts and dried shallots.

They also serve my v?n th?n (wonton noodles) and mi?n l??n (glass noodles with eel), but the hu tiu is better.

One of the best places to come for that bowl of snail noodles, if you ever have a craving.  Just point to the type of snails you like.  I prefer the small ones and the large ones are too rubbery.  Approx 30,000 vnd a bowl.

You can get a really great bowl of Bún Cá here for 30,000vnd. It's a tangy soup with noodles and crispy fried fish on top.  Ask for bánh ?a noodles for something a bit more filling.  Their bún riêu ??u ph? (20k vnd) is pretty good too (30k with beef).

33: NOODLES - Mi?n tr?n & Bánh ?úc nóng

In the alleyway of 8 Lê Ng?c Hân

This little spot has been said to serve some of the best mi?n tr?n in town (mixed glass noodles), however the specialty is actually bánh ?úc nóng (a type of plain dumpling made from rice flour), which is served in a soup and topped with minced pork, herbs and fried tofu (20,000 vnd per serve)

98 Tr?n H?ng ??o (the stall next the the HD Bank)

One of the few places in town selling H? Ti?u noodles (though not the best), which look similar to pho noodles, but are made from taro or tapioca starch and therefore have a chewier texture.

The best way to have it is to order h? ti?u khô which is the dry noodle dish mixed with beansprouts, minced pork, pork slices and topped with peanuts and dried shallots.  Comes with a small bowl of soup with three small sui cao dumplings - 30k vnd per serve.

The stall also serves my van than (wonton noodles)

37: NOODLES - a damn good bowl of pho ga!

A popular ph? spot with a cafe upstairs so you can have a cafe sua da with your brekkie.  Really good pho ga with chunks of chicken meat.  Ask for th?t tr?ng (white meat) if you don't want the extra bones and fat.

40k for a bowl of pho, a side of quay (fried dough sticks) and a tra da (ice green tea).

38: NOODLES - try ph? chua

M?C QUÁN, 53 NGUY?N KH?C HI?U

More a casual style restaurant setting, this place is one of the few places in town to try ph? chua, which is a sour rice noodle dish (tamarind based) with pork slices, herbs and salad - 40k vnd per dish. Also serving the usual Ph? cu?n , Ph? chiên ph?ng, Ph? chiên tr?ng dishes, but these are better had else where.

39: NOODLES - Bún Bò Nam B?

Some claim this tiny spot serves the best bún bò Nam B? in town. Try it out for 35k vnd per bowl, which is much cheaper than the famous joint on Hang Dieu.

- This is a great spot to sample the fried specialties and dumplings from Hue.
They serve the following dishes:

- Bánh kh?t (pictured): a delicious fried coconut milk and rice flour cup filled with shrimp (35,000 vnd per serve)

One of my favourite street food jaunts. Gotta have a big plate of Vit Rang Muoi with bun. Kinda like KFC popcorn chicken, but with duck and heaps more rustic ie. with bones and all. Stuff yourself with duck for 70-80,000 pp.

Quán Ngan Hi?n - Hàng Bông near corner of Phu Doan, in the courtyard of a kindergarden (open evenings).
Th?t ngan n??ng or grilled duck meat @ 75 Hàng Bông (near corner of Ph? Doãn. The ngan n??ng is boneless (though not fatless!) and is grilled over charcoal, really aromatic with a hint of sweetness.

Price is 25,000 vnd per stick (xiên). Order 2 per person to start with. Eat with bun noodles and canh m?ng (bamboo shoot soup with blood pudding), if you don't mind the pungent flavour.

59: BEEF STEAK & SEA SHELLS

3 Hòe Nhai - Bít t?t & ?c bi?n

This spot is so popular, it seems to take up half the street occupying several shop fronts.  They specialise in tasty bít t?t (Vietnamese beefsteak on a sizzling hotplate with fried eggs and fries - 60k per serve). In the evenings, the also sell a range of fresh sea shells and snails  if the greasy goodness of the steak is too much.
The mien xao tom (stirfried glass noodles with shrimp) is highly recommended and a bargain for 50k a serve.  If you're hungry, get a set for two people of 2 bit tet, a mien xao and cha da for 150k!

60: BBQ time!

?? N??ng, 61 Quán S? (between Lý Th??ng Ki?t and Th? Nhu?m) – night only

• Get your little coal BBQ with plates of thit bò (beef), gà(chicken), m?c (squid) or even n??ng nam b? (cow udders) to grill at your table (approx 40,000vnd perplate)
• Vegetarian options: khoailang (sweet potato), ??u b?p (okra), bánhmì (bread), n?m kim châm (enoki mushrooms) – approx 20,000 vnd per plate.

To sully a semi healthy meal, try the ph? chiên ph?ng which is a dish of deep fried pillows of rice noodles topped with stir fried beef and veggies - 45,000 vnd

Their menu is quite extensive. The n?m mi?n tôm Thái Lan (glass noodle and prawn salad Thai style) isn't bad at 45,000 vnd.  All pho xao type dishes are 45,000 vnd also.

This is one of the most popular spots to have kem xôi (sticky rice and ice-cream). If you feel like something savoury, the nem chiên (deep fried fermented pork, which tastes kinda like sausages) isn't bad either.

This is a great little spot to take visitors. The entrance is a little pathway in between two shops (a souvenir and a clothes shop) @ 11 Hang Gai. Walk right to the end and head to the very top floor for a brilliant view of Hoan Kiem Lake. You have to try the Cafe Trung Da - ice coffee with a sweet egg froth on top. YUM!

This place's a gem. Vietnamese run Japanese restaurant with a limited, but tasty menu, specialising in Jap pancakes (banh xeo nhat ban or okonomiyaki) for only 35,000 vnd each.
They also serve takoyaki (grilled octopus balls) 25,000 vnd for 5, kim-chi (20,000vnd) and noodles wrapped in omelet (45,000vnd).

Bia Hanoi is only 15,000 vnd and Sapporo is a bargain at 40,000 vnd a pop!

A great little Vietnamese restaurant in a small alley in Truc Bach. Lovely atmosphere for a group dinner, especially if you sit upstairs (on the floor around low tables). Good to have another Vietnamese restaurant option around town!

Specialises in fish dishes, but are a bit on the pricey side.

Try the fried field crabs (cua ??ng rang) for a tasty crunch to go with an ice cold beer!
